Last
year we started the Eurovision Fan Reviews, were you the readers
reviews the songs taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest. Today we
bring you the 39th Eurovision Fan Review for the 2015 contest.
The person who will be reviewing the next song in the Eurovision 2015 fan reviews is Matt from United Kingdom. Matt will be reviewing Portugal's entry "Há um mar que nos separa" by Leonor Andrade
You can read what Matt thinks of Portugal's entry below!
1. Hello Matt, thanks for agreeing to this, how long have you been a Eurovision fan for?
Matt: I have regularly watched Eurovision since 2007; however, it is only after 2013 that I really started to develop a deeper passion for it. Today Eurovision is a major part of my calendar and considering my birthday is also in May, Eurovision is still the most important event of the month.
2. Portugal decided their entry for Eurovision 2015 through the selection Festival da Canção 2015. Did you watch the show? If so what were some of your favourite moments?
Matt: Festival Da Cançao this year was quite subdued compared to other national finals. Many complained about the sound quality and after watching both the semi finals most people had lost hope in Portugal, sadly I was one of these people. Leonor Andrade was my favourite but so far it didn't stand out to me amongst the rest of Europe's selections.
3. The winner of the selection was Leonor Andrade, with the song "Há um mar que nos separa". Could you tell us what your opinionon the song?
Matt: Whilst looking through a Eurovision fan site I discovered that Portugal had decided to alter their song and so I listened to this new version. Immediately I was hooked. It was just how everything seemed to fit together: the new electronic beat nestled smugly under her voice, the way the song builds up with the introduction of some synths and slides into a chorus that fills me with joy. The song just works for me and very well indeed. Her voice doesn't overpower the song and for me the chorus takes you away from the drudgery of real life. This new makeover had turned an average song for me into one of my favourites, I couldn't stop listening to it and the introduction of the electronic beat has given us the only song in Eurovision this year which for me reflects something we might hear in the charts. I don't care if it's not in English because either way the song is just fantastic.
4. How would you compare "Há um mar que nos separa" to recent Eurovision entries from Portugal?
Matt: Suzy last year had a good song that was a fan favourite and a hook you couldn't escape; however, even Suzy fell victim to the curse of Portugal and couldn't leave the semis.
5. Portugal will be performing 7th in the second semi-final of Eurovision 2015. Do you think this is a good place for them to perform?
Matt: The second semi is very strong indeed but in true Eurovision style a country will qualify that no one was expecting, a country everyone had written off. Cue Portugal. Leonor could just make it in my humble opinion, her electro-beat song is surrounded by two ballads (and if we're honest quite dreary ones) so she could really stand out.
6. Where do you think Portugal will place overall at this years Eurovision Song Contest?
Matt: Portugal isn't a Eurovision success story and as much as I love Leonor I doubt that will change this year. If Portugal even qualify I'd expect a mid-table placing and if they don't qualify I'd like to hope they almost made it.
7. Finally, what are you most looking forward to about this years contest?
Matt: Eurovision 2015 is a strange year; we've got a ballad heavy set of songs in a time when EDM and Dance are flooding the charts across Europe. I'll be watching closely to see what happens and despite what people say I don't think this year has a clear winner at the moment. This could all change on the night and undoubtedly a song will win with quite a points margin again. Whatever happens though, I will support Portugal and vote for them!
