Last
year we started the Eurovision Fan Reviews, were you the readers
reviews the songs taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest. Today we
bring you the 34th Eurovision Fan Review for the 2015 contest.
The person who will be reviewing the next song in the Eurovision 2015 fan reviews is James from United Kingdom. James will be reviewing Sweden's entry "Heroes" by Måns Zelmerlöw.
You can read what James thinks of Sweden's entry below!
1. Hello James, thank you for agreeing to this, how long have you been a Eurovision fan for?
James: Hello Jessica! No problem! I'm very happy to help you out. I have been watching Eurovision since probably around 2000, but I can vaguely remember Gina G from 1996, when I was all of 6 years of age. (I have aged badly. Tip: Don't spend prolonged periods in the sun)
2. As we know Sweden selected their Eurovision 2015 entry via Melodifestivalen 2015. Did you watch the show? If so, what were some of your favourite moments?
James: Yes, I always follow Melfest. I have attended a number of editions too. However, this year I decided to give it a miss because of my lack of enthusiasm over the line up. Specifically, the absence of Lady Shirley of Clamp!
Favourite moments though: Easy!
1) Hasse Andersson! Heaven in a Kenny Rogers cum Michael McDonald effigy. (yes, that is the correct spelling)
2) Midnight Boy! What more is there to say about that 3 minutes of joy?
3) Sanna Nielsen actually turning out to be a pretty decent host. Although, I wish they wouldn't have had her sing at every opportunity
3. We know that Måns Zelmerlöw was crowned the winner of Melodifestivalen 2015 with the song "Heroes". What is your opinion on the song?
James: In the interests of total honesty and not self attributing the label of 'hypocrite' to myself, I never actually liked Heroes, and I probably never will. It's a little too generic. I do like Mans however! Having said all that.... I do believe that Mans will deliver a great show on the night of the final, and undoubtedly It will score very highly. I won't change my opinion post-contest to say I loved the song and always thought it would win though. That appears to be the norm among Eurovision fans. Perhaps it's a fear of not being seen as such an 'expert' after all.
4. In your own opinion, how would you compare "Heroes" to recent Eurovision entries from Sweden?
James: Since the turn of the decade I would rank Sweden's entries thus: 1) Loreen - Euphoria 2) Robin Stjernberg- You 3) Eric Saade - Popular 4) Mans - Heroes 5) Sanna - Undo
5. Sweden will be performing 11th in the second semi-final of Eurovision 2015. Do you think this is a good place for them to perform?
James: I have always believed that the obsessive focus on running order is tedious, boring, a total waste of time for the individual(s) involved, and beyond irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Stats can be made to suit anything: Men wearing white performing in the final, songs performing second, songs performed last, yada yada. Mostly it is coincidence and accidental. For example, in the days of a random draw, you may have had 4 slower songs and then a faster one coming immediately after. I don't believe that performing in 5th place was the blessing here, but rather the purely accidental placement of the slower songs. Success comes down to a good song, with clear hooks, well delivered, with good camera work, and a handful of luck. Performing 11th/17th/21st etc is purely coincidental. The cream always rises to the top!
Again, the multiple 'experts' feel this need to obsess over the stats, and ignore the various amounts of data to the contrary. It's all very wonkish. Y'know: Too many cooks spoil the broth.
6. Where do you think Sweden will place overall in this years Eurovision Song Contest?
James: I don't like the song. I do like Mans. I think the general quality of songs is pretty decent. Sweden's main competition will come from: Russia, Norway, Azerbaijan, Australia, and probably a few surprise packages too.
Never seen the appeal in: Estonia, Spain, Italy. Cyprus I hope scores well also. In addition to Ireland, The Netherlands, and Greece.
7. Finally, what are you most looking forward to about this years contest?
James: The staging. The hosts. The songs and how they'll be presented. The fall out after where people attempt to assert their superior 'expertness' over one another. < It is hilarious.
