Hello!
Today we are very excited to bring you and interview with Norway's Eurovision 2014 entry Carl Espen!
Carl Espen is Norway's entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 with the song "Silent Storm", who was written by his cousin Josefin Winther.
We sent Carl some questions and he has been so kind to answer them for us! Read what he said to us below!
1. Hello Carl! Thanks for agreeing to do this! How does it feel being choosen to represent Norway in Eurovision 2014?
Carl: "Hello! My pleasure. It is a fantastic feeling, and a very big responsibility. I feel very humbled and honored by the fact that my country wants me to represent them in the biggest music competition in the world. That is just a huge declaration of trust that I take very seriously."
2. As we know your were choosen to represent Norway in Eurovision through the national selection Melodi Grand Prix 2014, Could you explain to us how the idea to enter MGP came together?
Carl: "My cousin Josefin Winther, who is an artist and a songwriter, knew that I had a dream about singing for people. She wanted to write a song that was for me only, where I could express my true feelings. She wrote "Silent Storm" and showed it to me, without telling me that it was for me. I really liked it, and felt that it was mine right away. It seems Josefin knows me very well, because the lyrics are very personal and true for me. She then asked me if I would like to sing the song, and send it to Eurovision, and I said yes immediately. It felt like something I could be proud of that really represented me."
3. When you where choosen as one of the fifteen semi finalist for Melodi Grand Prix 2014 did you think that you would go on to win the contest?
Carl: "I was so shocked when I won the semi final. It was a very emotional moment for me, and Josefin. After that I was mostly focusing on singing the song even better, and didn't think too much about winning."
4. The song your are representing Norway with is "Silent Storm", Could you explain to us what the song is about?
Carl: "Well, it is a song written for me, and it is about my feelings. I might seem quiet and calm on the surface, but there are a lot of things going on right underneath. I feel that I am still trying to find my place in the world, and sometimes the feelings whirling around on my inside can feel like a "silent storm". The song also carries a growing hope that "someday I'll be calm"."
5. Could you tell us what you have been up to since Melodi Grand Prix?
Carl: "Yes, I have been very busy. I go to my singing teacher several times a week, and I have played several concerts, in London, Amsterdam, my hometown and some other things. I think I have done several hundred interviews, while also going back to work. I have had journalists following me around, and performed on TV and radio stations. It has been a fantastic month!"
6. We know that your performed at Eurovision in concert & the London Eurovision party along with some off the other Eurovision contestants, Could you tell us what your highlights where from the events?
Carl: "First of all, it was such a pleasure to meet the other artists and delegations. I can't believe that I am in this company of super experienced singers and people who have done this for many years. I am very humbled by that. Also it was fun to meet fans in person. They are so enthusiastic and supportive, and they make all the artists feel loved and liked. I really appreciate that quality."
7. Could you maybe tell us what your performance will be like in Copenhagen?
Carl: "We have a new stage, which gives us new possibilities, and that is very exciting. We will do our best to really take advantage of that, but always keep the main focus on the song, the lyrics and the performance. That is the absolute first priority. Everything on stage must be there to amplify the message and atmosphere in the song. So with that in mind, we will not change it around to a disco party or something else crazy. :)"
8. Have any past Eurovision contestants given you advice? If so what have they said?
Carl: "I have received a lot of good advice from many talented people, contestants, and other people. I think most people tell me to keep being myself, and to keep up the hard work. And that's what I'm gonna do!"
9. Finally, Is there anything you would like to say to the readers of ESCStarz?
Carl: "I would like to send out a warm greeting to the readers of ESCStarz, and thank them for the interest they take in me. All the support and love I receive truly means a lot, and I never take it for granted. All the best from Carl Espen."
