Hello!
A few weeks ago we launched a new feature that ment we interview someone from each country in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 & ask their review on their countries entry!
Today we are interviewing Jamie O'Connor about Spain's 2014 entry!
Jamie is a massive Eurovision fan from the United Kingdom! We sent Jamie some questions about Spain's entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014, which he has kindly answered for us!
Spain's entry in Eurovision 2014 is Ruth Lorenzo, who placed 5th in the UK version off X Factor in 2008. The song Ruth will be singing is "Dancing In The Rain". Read what Jamie said to us below!
1. Hi James! Thanks for doing this for us! How long have you been a Eurovision fan for?
Jamie: Hello, my pleasure! I've been a Eurovision fan since 2003 but I've properly followed the contest since 2006 in regards to national finals & so on. I've also been to a few contests and I'm hopeful of attending again in 2015 if the circumstances are right.
2. This year Spain choose their entry by a National Final, Did you watch the National final? If so what did you think?
I did watch the national final.
Jamie: Firstly, I thought the quality was very high and that's a credit to the broadcaster and a positive reflection on the music scene in Spain. Secondly, I thought in Ruth & Brequette they had 2 acts which would have given them a great chance of an excellent result in Copenhagen. However, Brequette wasn't amazing live and so Ruth just about squeezed out a victory.
Kudos to her and well done to the Spanish broadcaster for an excellent show.
3. Spain is being represented by Ruth Lorenzo this year, What do you think off her vocals?
Jamie: I loved Ruth in X factor a number of years back now- time really does fly, what was that? 2008? 6 years is such a long time.
Ruth is a strong vocalist with a good range and most importantly she feels the song & really emotes, which in turn helps the audience feel the song & understand it's message.
Not many artists genuinely engage with their music, so it's full credit to her for doing that. Obviously she's a very passionate woman with what she does and more so about who she is.
4. The song Ruth will be singing is "Dancing In The Rain", What do you think off the song?
Jamie: I won't lie, the song was not my favourite in Spain but the competent delivery of it helped to change my mind & then the excellent music video that she put out, followed by the performance on the Spanish version of strictly come dancing really helped to win me over.
My opinion now of the song is that it is has a fighting chance of winning and is almost bolted on for a Pastora type result at the very least.
5. Ruth will be singing her song in both Spanish & English, Do you think the song works well with two launguges? Or do you think she should have stuck to just one?
Jamie: Hmmm, good question. Spanish is what I class as a passionate language- if you watch a native speaker for a while then you'll see how illustrated they can get when expressing themselves. Furthermore, it's a lovely musical language and has a beautiful flow to it and so with that in mind, I am very happy that Ruth decided to keep parts of the song in Spanish & also equally happy that she has English verses because they appeal to a wider audience. This linguistic mix has actually made a beautiful song and one that I think (and hope) deserves to do well.
6. Because Spain are in the big 5 they are already guranteed a place in the final, Where do you think they will place this year?
Jamie: There are a lot of ballads this year, however what there are not a lot of are songs that you hear & you sit back & you go 'wow, this one is really strong and I really feel it'. Perhaps only Belgium, Malta & Austria are the only others to give me that vibe and so I genuinely believe that juries will reward Ruth and televoters will feel her passion. So I think Ruth will be top 5 BUT I hope that Ruth will win.
7. Finally, what are you most looking foward to in Eurovision 2014?
Jamie: Just gonna list 5 things.
1) Conchita Wurst.
2) Hopefully a return to the top 10 is on the cards.
3) Ruth.
4) Malta- Really happy song & the people writing this off are the ones who have lived in the ESC bubble too long and have this pre-defined idea of what works and what doesn't. The shock they'll get when Malta does well will knock their weaves off.
5) Aram MP3- I didn't like it at first at all but now I think it's one of the best songs on offer and if it wins then I would be happy for it.
