Hello!
A few weeks ago we launched a new feature that ment we interview someone from each country in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 & ask their review on their countries entry!
Today we are interviewing Patrick McCurdie about Italy's 2014 entry!
Patrick is a Eurovision fan from the United Kingdom! We sent Patrick a few questions about Italy's entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 and he has kindly answered them for us!
Italy's Eurovision 2014 entry is Emma Marrone with the song "La Mia Citta". Read what Patrick said to us below!
1. Hello Patrick, Thanks for agreeing to do this! How long have you been a Eurovision fan?
Patrick: I grew up watching with my mum, but drifted away for many years, still keeping a passing interest. I remember vividly the days of heady finishes with Michael Ball and Sonia (which I still love). But I rediscovered it in 2009 and it's slowly became an obsession which I'm very happy about since then.
2. Since Italy's return to Eurovision they have used Sanremo Music Festival to select their entry, However this year they went for an Internal selection. Do you think it was a good move going for an Internal selection? Or would you have liked to seen Italy use Sanremo again?
Patrick: I'm a great believer in a National Final. I watched the UK do that as a kid, and seeing all manners of sometimes weird and often wonderful acts through the European finals, now convinces me it's so much more romantic than an internal selection. Having said that I loved Marco Mengoni last year, and love Emma Marrone this year, so both methods can be achieve good results.
3. This year's Italy entry is Emma Marrone, What do you think of her vocals?
Patrick: I didn't immediately take to her singing on the video release. I thought it quite muted. But I saw her sing at the German final and she unleashed something completely different, a really raw and emotional performance. She's intense, and she can get caught up in her vocal a little, but the passion in her voice carries her through it.
4. The song Emma will be singing is "La mia città", What do you think of the song?
Patrick: I don't tend to like the rockier numbers but Italian seems to really suit it. Lyrically, you have to consider it has the line "I love downtown traffic, I love parking inattentively." and something about manholes. But the chorus is superb, and hooks the song brilliantly. The verses can be about nonsense if they wish, it's in Italian, and I don't speak Italian.
5. How would you compare Emma's song to previous Italy Eurovision entries?
Patrick: "L'essenziale" became one of my favourites of last year, but I've liked all their songs since their return. Considering the shift from piano to beehive to the sharp suit of Marco, and now Emma, we've had a bit of everything. I think there's bit of grit in Marco's voice when he get's going, that has carried onto this years entry with Emma, and I like it.
6. Since Italy are a member off the Big 5 they will already be in the final, Where do you think they will place overall?
Patrick: My favourites do terribly most years, so I already feel apprehensive for Emma. I think the contest is very very open this year, but I don't think we'll be in Italy next year. Top 5 would be excellent and deserved, but thinking with my eurovision head rather than my eurovision heart, top 10 might be a more realistic goal.
7. Finally, what are you most looking foward to about Eurovision 2014?
Patrick: It's a very strong year. I'm excited about this year so much because I've never been as involved in a Eurovision campaign as I have this one, thanks to the fantastic twitter Eurovision community. There's so much content out there and so many people sharing it. On a personal level I'm mostly looking forward to convincing myself I'll survive not actually being at the contest, as last year, my first Eurovision in Malmo, was the most spectacular and memorable experience.
